South End is a diverse neighborhood with a rich history. The nation’s first gold rush began in this area, with the construction of Charlotte’s first railroad following after in the 1850s. This South End railroad connected Charlotte to Columbia and Charleston, allowing the city to thrive and develop. Today, South End is continuing to grow with thousands of residential units on the way.

Students in South End are assigned to several different schools in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School District. This neighborhood is zoned for Barringer Elementary, Dilworth Elementary, Sedgefield Middle School, Alexander Graham Middle School, West Charlotte High School and Harding University High School. Both elementary schools are high performing, with test scores averaging higher than the state average.

The West Charlotte High School is an excellent school for academics. In addition to having high test scores, it is an International Baccalaureate World School offering the IB Diploma Programme. This is an advanced learning program to prepare students for higher education and it is recognized by universities worldwide. This school has also achieved State Championship titles in men’s basketball, football, men’s track, women’s basketball, and volleyball. In 1989, a group of students formed Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAFE) after a fellow classmate passed away off-campus. This is a mission to ensure student safety and promote a secure environment at school. Since this organization was created at West Charlotte H.S. in 1989, it has grown to be a national nonprofit with over 230,000 members in 48 states and 7 countries.

The Revolution Park Complex sits on 22 acres and features a picnic shelter, golf course, First Tee facility, 2 playgrounds, 3 softball fields, and a synthetic turf football field built in partnership with the Carolina Panthers NFL team. This park is also home to a 30,000 square foot public recreation facility. The Revolution Park Sports Academy offers a golf pro shop, fitness center, boxing ring, concession area, locker rooms, multipurpose rooms, recreational programs for all ages, and after school activities.
