Residential areas began to arise in Elizabeth in the 1890s. Development started to flourish in 1902 after a trolley system was completed, bringing in new residents and businesses. In 1989, much of Elizabeth was nationally recognized as historic. The Elizabeth Historic District features residential areas ranging from large mansions to smaller bungalows.

Kings College, Central Piedmont Community College, Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy, and several doctors offices are located in Elizabeth. These schooling and nursing establishments give the neighborhood empathetic and nurturing characteristics. Elizabeth is bordered by Cherry, Chantilly, Commonwealth and Belmont.
Education
Students in Elizabeth attend the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District. The Myers Park High School has higher proficiency levels, graduation rates, and SAT scores that are higher than the North Carolina averages. Myers Park is a large campus with 13 buildings sitting on 62-acres. This high school also has its own unique auto-tech building. In addition to having excellent academics and resources, the Mustangs also have standout clubs and athletics. The Myers Park yearbook, student newspaper, and literary magazine have won first place awards from the American Scholastic Press Association. The debate team is nationally recognized for their success and is one of the best teams in North Carolina. Myers Park athletics have also achieved state championship titles in tennis, basketball, soccer, and lacrosse.

Independence Park features 19-acres of land where families and friends gather to exercise and enjoy the outdoors. The property consists of walking trails, batting cages, picnic shelters, gardens, tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball field, a volleyball court, and a playground. The Little Sugar Creek Greenway provides 19 miles of trails and land connectors for walkers, runners, nature lovers, and cyclists.

The American Legion Memorial Stadium is located in Elizabeth. This is home of the semi-professional field lacrosse team, the Charlotte Hounds. In addition to the stadium being a location for games, concerts and other entertaining events, it also contains history. On September 10th, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt came to Elizabeth and opened the facility upon its completion. The rally was a celebration of Charlotte’s perseverance and economic advancements throughout the Great Depression.
The Visulite Theatre is a premier location for live music and the BB&T Ballpark is home of the Charlotte Knights baseball team. There are also several family-owned restaurants in the area, such as the Caswell Station, The Third Place, Lupie’s Cafe, and Sabor Latin Street Grill. For ice cold drinks and refreshing cocktails, you can head to the Thomas Street Tavern or Legion Brewing. On a warm night, you can also check out the rooftop bar at the Whiskey Warehouse.
Elizabeth is conveniently located next to Uptown Charlotte. Residents can make the easy commute work, shopping outlets, and entertainment in the city. The NASCAR Hall of Fame, Ray’s Splash Planet Indoor Waterpark, and the Bank of America Stadium are popular attractions in Charlotte. The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is also just a short drive away.
